Citrus Cinnamon Roasted Chicken: A Quick Twist on a Classic Family Favorite

This dish is one of my go-to meals when I need something quick, easy, and delicious. In just 10 minutes of prep time, you can have a beautifully roasted chicken that’s full of flavor, making it the perfect option for a busy family dinner or when you have guests over and don’t have much time to cook. My kids absolutely love this dish, and the best part is, if we don’t finish the whole chicken, we turn the leftovers into a fantastic chicken, egg, and mayo sandwich the next day!

What Makes This Dish Special?

The real magic here is in the combination of citrus, cinnamon, and a dash of soy sauce. The oranges bring a lovely sweetness and tang, which pairs beautifully with the savory flavors of the chicken. They also help keep the chicken juicy while adding a gorgeous citrusy aroma to the entire dish. It’s a twist on the traditional roast chicken, offering something different but still comforting and familiar.

Oranges, beyond just being a delightful addition to this recipe, are packed with vitamin C, making them an immune-boosting powerhouse. They can also help in digestion and provide a nice touch of sweetness to offset the savory elements of the dish. When roasting, the oranges caramelize and release their juices, creating a fragrant base that makes everything taste like it’s been slow-cooked for hours, though it’s actually ready in no time!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for crisping)
  • 6 oranges (2 juiced, 4 sliced)
  • A few sprigs of fresh rosemary
  • Carrots and potatoes (or other vegetables you like)
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

How To Make It:

  1. Prep the Chicken: Start by drying your chicken thoroughly and rubbing it with butter (this helps achieve that beautiful, golden skin). Stuff the chicken with rosemary and some of the sliced oranges.
  2. Arrange the Veggies: Lay the remaining orange slices on the bottom of your roasting pan. Add potatoes, carrots, and any other vegetables you like. I sometimes add zucchini for extra flavor.
  3. Make the Sauce: Mix the juice of two oranges, cinnamon, and soy sauce, then drizzle it all over the chicken and veggies. A little olive oil over everything adds richness.
  4. Roast: Cover with foil and roast at 180°C (350°F) for about an hour and fifteen minutes, removing the foil for the last 15 minutes to allow the chicken to crisp up nicely.
  5. Serve: Once done, let the chicken rest for a few minutes, carve, and serve with the roasted veggies and fragrant orange slices.

Why This Recipe Works:

It’s simple yet elegant. The chicken gets a crisp golden skin, and the oranges release a sweet, citrusy glaze that brings an unexpected twist to your typical roast chicken. It’s full of flavor and packed with nutrients, making it a dish that’s not only delicious but also healthy for you and your family.

And the best part? Leftovers. If we have any chicken left over, I use it for a quick and easy chicken, egg, and mayo sandwich the next day. It’s a fun way to repurpose the meal and cut down on waste!

Give this recipe a try the next time you need a quick family dinner or something easy yet impressive for guests. It’s sure to become a favorite in your home, just like it is in ours!

Health Tip: The addition of oranges not only adds flavor but boosts the vitamin C content of the meal, which is essential for immune health. It’s a great way to sneak some extra nutrients into your family\’s dinner. Enjoy!
